Savage Arms Stevens 301 Youth Shotgun Review

Stevens-301.jpg

If you’re looking for a lightweight, east-to-use shotgun, look no further than the Savage/Stevens Model 301 single shot. This shotgun comes in three of the most popular calibers: 12, 20, and .410. I purchased the .410 model of this shotgun for my daughter to use for turkey hunting and it is her first firearm. This shotgun was made popular by the surge in the popularity with the use of TSS loads for turkey hunting. Savage has paired with Federal to come up with this turkey killing shotgun that is made for everyone. This is perfect for a young hunter who is shooting their first gun, as well as, the seasoned hunter who is looking for a challenge or maybe just looking for something with a little less kick.

Features:

The 301 comes with a .5” this recoil pad, picatinny optics rail, and a brass bead front sight. The gun is equipped with an exposed extra full turkey choke which can be replaced with any WinChoke style tube. The hammer has just two positions: fully forward and fully cocked. A transfer bar safety located in front of the hammer, prevents accidental discharges if dropped or bumped. The gun is easily broken down into two pieces with the push of a button on the fore end. Open the action and the barrel slides right off.

Overall Opinion:

This lightweight, easy-to-use shotgun is a new favorite of mine. The recoil is super low making it ideal for younger shooters ready to for their first hunt or for a fun pastime activity. The simplicity of breaking the fun down makes for very easy cleaning and could be stowed in a backpack for back country trips. By simply swapping out the choke tubes this gun can be used for a multitude of game species. We are going to using it for deer season this year by pairing it with an improved cylinder choke and .410 slugs. With a low price point, and paired with Federal TSS, this gun is one to defiantly check out.
