Trout Fishing: One of America's Most Popular Species

fishing1.jpg

The trout is one of America’s most popular fish that sportsmen seek. This may be due to the fact that they are abundant from coast to coast, and they put up a pretty good fight. Trout are also a tasty meal if you decide to keep the fish. There are three main species of trout, such as the Rainbow, the Brook, and the Brown trout. Fishing for trout is a great time for kids and adults that range from beginners to experienced anglers. I know my family enjoys spending time together while throwing a few lines into the local waterways. As always, be sure to check your local regulations for seasons, size limits, and any other information on regulations that may apply to your area.

Where to find trout

Trout are most commonly found in cold waters and live in moving waters as they run up and down the creeks or rivers in search of food. Trout are one of most common stocked fish because they can be dropped in streams, ponds and pretty much anywhere in between. Check with your local fish and wildlife agency for their stocking schedule and this will give you good information on your best chances of having the most action during the season. Trout love to hang out in larger, deeper pools in streams. This is a good place find a fish. Also, look for undercut banks as they provide a place for a hungry trout to hide. If your fishing in flowing water, trout like to hide behind large rocks as this provides a “velocity barrier”. From their position behind the rock they are able to strike at food as it comes by.

Basic equipment

Any light weight rod and reel combo will work for trout fishing. The most common weight for fishing line is 4-8 lb. test and size 8 hooks. The lures and bait that can be used is plentiful. There are many options that can be used such as:

Critter lures

Critter lures

  • Critters: These types of lures imitate the larger insects that commonly fall into rivers and streams and are eaten by trout all the time.

  • Tubes: Tubes are meant to imitate zooplankton and other easy snacks that fish snack on. While they do not look like much of anything you’ve seen, they are a common artificial bait used.

  • Worm imitators: Live worms get eaten by just about every fish in streams and rivers. This type of bait can be purchased in bright colors and look like a worm

  • Spoons & Spinners: These types of lures are the bread and butter of trout fisherman. They come in different colors and have a metallic “spoon” that adds a flashiness that entices a fish to bite them. They can be easily changed out by the use of a swivel.

  • Powerbait: This type of bait works great with stocked trout as it resembles the food they were fed while being raised, prior to being released into the creek or stream. This also comes in a variety of colors.

  • Natural baits work great too. Worms, corn, insects, and even shrimp can get a trout’s attention. Don’t be afraid to use natural baits where permitted. Some streams may be listed as “Artificial Bait Only”, so be sure to check local regulations.
