Elk 101 Online Course Review
The Elk 101 Online Course is very helpful. It is broken into 17 modules with two to four chapters per module. It covers everything ranging from how to choose a tag and apply in the draw to explaining how to quarter and carry out an elk to gear and call techniques. It is very detailed and easy to follow. It sets realistic expectations for both a first-time elk hunter and experienced elk hunter.
To take full advantage of the course, you will want to have a membership to OnX Hunt Maps, which if hunting out west is almost 100% required anyway. OnX is the best $100 you will spend on hunting gear each year. It is only $30 if you only want one state and $100 if you want all of them. Often times, there are codes to get 20-40% off so just google OnX discount codes before signing up in order to find them.
The Elk 101 course is $99, but sometimes you can find a $10-$25 off coupon code for it so make sure to watch for that when signing up. The modules I found most helpful were Module 2: Scouting, Module 7: Locating Elk, Module 15: Post Rut/Late Season, and Module 17: Hunting Cow Elk. I have five years of elk hunting experience and still gained a ton of knowledge from each of these sections.
You get access to all of the information for one year and with just an hour per night you can complete the course in about 25 days. Some sections are worth going through multiple times. For example, I went through the scouting section about five different times. Each time, I got a better picture of what I was looking for.
The Elk 101 Course is great for first-time and experienced elk hunters looking to kill more elk. It is probably the third best thing I have bought for my elk hunting, the first being boots and second being an OnX membership. I highly recommend it.
